Straight Handlebar Conversions

I have used all sorts of bikes for pleasure riding and general commuting in the last 20 years.

I have finally settled on a formula, which I really like.

I convert traditional style racing bikes by replacing the drop bars with a mountain bike straight handlebar with bar ends, either carrying brakes only or with index gears as well.

I also fit good road tyres, alloy platform pedals, a cartridge bottom bracket bearing and a comfortable sports saddle.

I generally replace the existing racer chainrings with mountain bike triple rings (although only using the two larger rings). This slightly lowered gearing range is ideal for the hilly local terrain.

This formula has the advantages of light weight, low road resistance comfortable ride and gearing, in an inexpensive package.

If anyone requires an existing bike modified as above, either simply by fitting a straight bar and brake levers or the higher spec detailed, I would be happy to quote a price for the work and parts.

Note that my standard specification now includes the following components in aluminuum alloy; Handlebar, seatpost, bar ends and if requested an alloy adjustable handlebar stem.

Pictured below are four straight bar road bikes, an old Raleigh "team banana" racer modified to a medium spec which I use for fairweather commuting. A higher spec lighter bike, a third bike built for a customer and a ladies racer heavily modified.
